As an art educator I am concerned with building a connection between individuality and an appreciation for the arts. Art is the most important way people tell us how they view the world! I think it is critical to thread the importance of symbols, viewing, and interpreting art as a culture, society, and world together for not only a better understanding but also appreciation for all backgrounds. In our ever changing world students are in need of support, knowledge and mentor ship that will lead them to a successful future that is accepting of all. I chose teaching as a career as it has the ability to empower, inspire and change lives. I have a passion for connecting with youth and providing them the tools to become confident young adults that will develop into positively contributing members of society!
A goal I have as an educator is for students to recognize there is never one solution to a problem. Students are given opportunity within the art classroom to utilize their problem solving skills to complete projects, assignments and tasks with their own individual approach. This daily challenge encourages students to look at obstacles and solutions differently. This idea has hopes that students will take these skills outside of the classroom into other subjects and with them as they pursue a career later on in life.
My classroom provides a safe, respectful and honest learning environment. I want students to feel welcome, gain confidence and knowledge and leave excited to return. I achieve this goal by utilizing differentiating instructional methods and allowing for exploration, discussion and reflection. I have a vision that students will return years later sharing with me where they are in their lives and thank me for embedding a love for life long learning and appreciation for life and others.
Art has the ability to teach more than skills and techniques. I have experienced the positive impact artistic creation is able have on a student when they work through the creative process. Through art, students are able to define self, build confidence and gain a sense of pride within their work and everyday actions they are faced with. I feel extremely passionate that the interdisciplinary aspect to art can be a very positive contribution to the school day in which students can make multiple connections. My teaching style includes all learners and aim to incorporate other academic areas in every lesson. The classroom is the perfect place to allow students to explore diverse technology, which is a necessary tool for their success.
As I continue to strive to be the best educator I can be for students, the school and the community, I recognize the ongoing dedication of research and professional development that is necessary to achieve this. I continue to attend state, national and international conferences to expose myself to diverse approaches to teaching being practiced all over the world. There is so much to learn. I am excited to continue my adventure of learning and teaching!
