creating a supportive environmentIn my first year of teaching I realized that the art classroom should feel different. It should be a place that students enter and then escape from their day. In the beginning of the trimester I ask one thing of my students, come in with a smile and a good attitude. I share a quote that my father recited to me often growing up, "everyday may not be good, but there is good in everyday".
Painted on my wall as you exit the classroom is "Make it a great day". We discuss the power you have in making your day great!

SCHOOL YEAR MANTRA
Every year Rotolo Middle School Art Department comes up with a mantra. This is something that we run our program, classrooms, procedures, routines....and pretty much everything by! WE SAY IT ALL THE TIME! 2016 is... DO YOUR JOB! The image on the left is a bulletin board in the hallway! We discussed what 'doing your job' looks like in all parts of life. You need to do your job as a friend. You must do your job as a child or sibling. You must do your job in the art room. These mantras teach great social emotional lessons and give students the responsibility they need as they grow up. We love mantras! |
